Head to Bald Head Island this Fall

A trip to Bald Head island will be unique and memorable. Whether you are going to get married in the picturesque surroundings, looking for some peace and quiet, or something for the entire family, Bald Head Island has you covered.

Hanging out on the beach, taking in the sights, a few rounds of golf, or just enjoying the traffic-free luxury, here are a few highlights you may want to consider on your next visits. Regardless of why you are visiting, there will be something for everyone.

Enjoy the History

If you love history, you will want to sign up for a historical island tour. The tour gives you a peek at what it would have looked like and what it would have been like to be there in the 1500s.

It takes you by the Old Boathouse, the foundation of the Cape Fear Light, and Captain Charlie’s Station, three lighthouse keeper’s cottages dating back to 1903.

The Ghost Walk will take you through more than 350 years of island history, introducing you to the tales of lighthouse keepers and lifesavers, pirates, and river pilots that make up Bald Head Island legend.

The Smith Island Museum should also be a must-see. Get an up-close look at some of the fascinating artifacts and learn about the history of the island. With admission, you can climb Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse. Climb up the stairs for the most breath-taking view of the island. Just the view alone of Old Baldy is well worth the time.

Take in the Views

One of the best parts of visiting the island is that are are no cars. No noise, no traffic jams, and no exhaust. Rent a bike and take a lovely ride around the island. Pack a nice picnic lunch and make a day of it. Over 15 miles of coastal views will allow you plenty to see.

Walking around is also a great way to see the island and all its beauty. The M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail provides nearly 360° views of the marsh. Plus, there are markers all along the way to let you know what plants you are seeing.

If you love being out on the water, rent a kayak and have a paddle around the island to see it from a different angle. Check out the creeks and get your camera ready to snap pictures of the beautiful birds, like herons and egrets, that you will see.

Great Dining Options

Find all kinds of treats and dining options from The Bald Head Island club to the ice cream shop and local, fresh island meals. Most come with a spectacular view. You can also order ahead at Maritime Market and have grocery delivery or bring your selection to the beach for a picnic.
