Winter Comes to Bald Head Island

Posted By: Lauren Frye
Posted: February 15, 2010

Snow on Bald Head Island is a rare, but lovely, occurrence. The island feels even more quiet and undisturbed than usual. This past Saturday the island was blanketed in snow, creating some beautiful vignettes we wanted to share.

Snow fall on Captain Charlies

The beach was a winter wonderland

A rare shot of a snowy beach access

The heavy snow weighs down the trees in the forest

Snow on the native yucca plants

BHI Adventure Series: Birding in the Marsh

Posted By: Jason Frye
Posted: February 11, 2010

This post is the first in our new Adventure Series, which will feature a first-person account of a variety of expeditions, adventures and outings on Bald Head Island.

Morning on the marsh is a prime birding time.

On a cold Monday morning in February I found myself standing at the edge of the marsh on Bald Head Island, peering at a pair of great egrets through my binoculars. I held my breath, afraid they’d hear me and throw their great white wings wide and take to the cold morning sky in search of a more peaceful hunting ground. When I finally exhaled, they stayed where they were: knee deep in the marsh, hunting for breakfast.

This was my first time birding and Maureen Dewire, Director of Education and Senior Naturalist with the Bald Head Island Conservancy, had agreed to take me on one of their Birding BHI expeditions. She and her father, Bob, had spent most of Saturday and Sunday scouting the island and were eager to take me to some of the hot spots. The marsh between Bald Head Island and Middle Island was one of them.

“Yesterday we saw 58 species,” Maureen says as we drive slowly, one eye on the road, one on the marsh. “We saw two eagles hunting, I’d love to see them again today.”
