Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo Attracts Crews From Across North Carolina

Bald Head Island , N.C. – Bald Head Island’s 20th annual Fishing Rodeo, held June 2-4 on Bald Head Island, attracted 13 boats and crews from across North Carolina to compete for the top prize. Competitors fished for wahoo, tuna and dolphin.

This year’s fishing rodeo was an enjoyable tournament with familiar faces as well as new. “We feel honored that so many captains make it this annual event,” says Wendy Irick, Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo Chair.

Captain Mike King and crew from Wrightsville Beach, NC, fishing aboard Stream Weaver, reeled in the first-place prize of $4,680. The winning team caught a combined weight of 247.00 pounds. Second-place winner Captain Rick Edwards and crew aboard Abigail II, won $2,340.00 for a total catch of 134.00 pounds. Third-place prize of $780.00 went to Captain Joe Seegers and crew, fishing aboard Hooked Up, for a 122.68 pound total catch.

Lady Anglers compete in their respective categories for heaviest fish. Kelly George aboard Stream Weaver took the Lady Angler trophy by reeling in a 34.24 pound dolphin.

Catches from the two-day event totaled 803.80 pounds combined in all categories. The average weight of the 36 fish caught during the tournament was 22.33 pounds. 

This year’s catch and release billfish winner was Brad Mulahy aboard Over Equipped. His white marlin catch earned him 50 points and $2,340.00.

A donation from the proceeds of the 20th annual Rodeo will be made to The Old Baldy Foundation, which works to preserve the Old Baldy Lighthouse.
