In addition to this year’s Smith Island Art League Member Show, on Saturday, May 26, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm Junior Members under the age of 18 will be exhibiting their artwork. The children’s work will be hung for the duration of the adult show. The theme this year is What Bald Head Means to You. Their artwork will include drawings, watercolor, photographs, collage, paper mache and fabric art. The show is open to the public.
Last year’s Memorial Day Show was the first time the art league sponsored this show. The purpose was to encourage young people to pursue art and build confidence by letting them see their art hung in the same room with art league members. The young people saw their framed art hung with their name and age attached. They wore name tags. Most of the participants were children or grandchildren of the adult members, so they knew how an art show worked and were thrilled to be the center of attention. Adults that attended the show were fascinated with their work. They appreciated how well the children handled the challenge of the perimeters of the theme and also viewing the interpretation of small children vs. up through 17 year old’s versions.
