One of Bald Head Island's favorite summer traditions is back! Every Wednesday morning throughout the summer, runners, walkers and families gather for the Bald Head Island Conservancy's Turtle Trot 5K—a longstanding island tradition that combines fitness, fun and conservation.

For more than a decade, the weekly Turtle Trots have welcomed island visitors and residents of all ages to experience one of Bald Head Island's most scenic race courses while supporting an important cause. Each race serves as a fundraiser for the Bald Head Island Conservancy, with proceeds helping to fund the organization's conservation, education and research efforts, including its nationally recognized Sea Turtle Protection Program.

Beginning at the Conservancy campus, the 5K course winds through Bald Head Island's beautiful maritime forest, offering participants a chance to enjoy the island's unique natural beauty. Whether you're chasing a personal best or simply taking a leisurely walk with family and friends, the Turtle Trot is designed for every pace and every age.

The race features four age divisions for both male and female participants:

  • 10 & Under
  • 11–17
  • 18–39
  • 40+

First-place finishers in each age group receive a commemorative sea turtle medal, and every registered participant receives an official Turtle Trot T-shirt. Registration is completed online. Participants should arrive 20 to 25 minutes before the 8:30 a.m. start time for check-in.

“Turtle Trots are a testament to the BHI community's commitment to living in harmony with nature,” says Bald Head Island Conservancy Philanthropy Specialist Kaitlin O’Toole. “What began as a summer intern's passion project has grown into a beloved tradition. More than 2,000 racers came together last year to raise over $100,000 for our mission. Whether we're patrolling beaches for nesting sea turtles, inspiring future conservation leaders through education programs, or responding to wildlife emergency calls from across the island, we're so grateful for our racers, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators that help make our work possible."

Whether you're a seasoned runner or looking for a memorable family activity during your Bald Head Island vacation, the Turtle Trot offers the perfect way to start a summer morning. Every step supports the Bald Head Island Conservancy's mission to discover, learn, conserve, and preserve the island's extraordinary coastal environment for future generations.

Weekly Turtle Trots are held each Wednesday throughout the summer, along with select holiday races. Advance registration is encouraged, as these popular events often draw well over 100 participants each week.
