Celebrate National Lighthouse Day at Old Baldy: “Run for the Light” Road Race

Every August, Bald Head Island shines a little brighter in honor of National Lighthouse Day. As North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse, Old Baldy has watched over the Cape Fear coast since 1817. This year, the island community comes together once again to celebrate its beloved beacon with the Old Baldy Foundation’s annual “Run for the Light” road race.
Mark your calendars for Friday, August 8, when runners and walkers of all ages will gather for an evening of fitness and fun, all in support of preserving Old Baldy. The event features three races to choose from: a 10k for serious competitors, a 5k perfect for casual runners, and a 1-mile fun run designed for families and kids. With races beginning around 6 p.m., participants will enjoy a scenic route that winds through Bald Head Island’s maritime forest, marsh, and charming neighborhoods—all under the soft glow of the island’s famous lighthouse.
Race check-in opens at 4 p.m., giving participants time to pick up race packets, stretch, and take in the festive atmosphere. Whether you’re racing to set a personal best or strolling in the fun run, “Run for the Light” is a unique way to celebrate Bald Head Island’s rich maritime history while supporting the preservation efforts of the Old Baldy Foundation.
Get a move on and don’t wait! Register here and be part of a Bald Head Island tradition that brings the community together in a spirited celebration of its most iconic landmark.
