A Look Back on Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island Old Baldy

So long 2017, you’ve been a great year for Bald Head Island! From laid-back getaways to exciting celebrations, Bald Head Island has had a busy year. Here’s a look back at fun on the island in 2017.

Bald Head Island celebrated a very special birthday in 2017, the 200th birthday of Old Baldy Lighthouse. This is the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina, designed to guide mariners safely through the mouth of the Cape Fear River. With over 28,000 visitors each year, Old Baldy Lighthouse is truly a treasure to the island and the 200th birthday was celebrated by all visiting Bald Head Island with exciting events throughout the year.

Last year Bald Head Island was the chosen spot for Our Dream Beach House: Southern Living Idea House 2017! The carefree car-free barrier island provides the perfect vibe for the beach house of your dreams. Design, decor and views of the home are breathtaking. Tickets to tour the 2017 Southern Living Idea House in Cape Fear Station were sold with proceeds benefiting the Old Baldy Foundation.

Summer was a success on Bald Head Island with the annual Pirate Invasion in June.  Sea battles, Pirate parties, musical performances, magic shows, sword fighting demonstrations and treasure hunts were just a few of the fun events throughout the weekend. Fourth of July is one of the most festive times of year on Bald Head Island and 2017 saw a celebration like no other. Ghost Walks, Kayak Trips, Annual Golf Cart Parade and an amazing firework show that lit up the town. Visiting Bald Head Island in the summer is a must!

Another rewarding Roast & Toast on the Coast was held on Bald Head Island and co-hosted with Southern Living magazine. Wine dinners, an old-fashioned Oyster Roast and live concerts were enjoyed by all. Delicious Southern delicacies and Sunday brunches have us counting down the days till the next annual event.

Bald Head Island is a subtropical island that can only be reached by ferry or private vessel. 10,000 acres of untouched beach, marsh and maritime forest preserves along with intimate vacation rentals that boasts the natural surroundings lure those looking for a slower, relaxed pace. Make plans to visit Bald Head Island this year and see what amazing things 2018 will bring!
