Island Retreat Spa Reopens with New Owners

Springtime brings great news for Bald Head Island residents and vacationers alike, as various new projects and businesses are popping up around the Island. Most recently, the luxurious Island Retreat & Spa has now reopened and is under new management.

In true Bald Head Island fashion, the business is a family affair and is now owned by Maritime Market owners, Claude and Melissa Pope, and owned/operated by their daughter and son­in­law, Katie and Greg Guthrie. With years of previous Bald Head Island career experience and undisputed love for the Island, the family has taken on the task of transforming the Island Retreat & Spa into the renowned destination resort they know it can be.  

Meet the Owners/Operators

The husband and wife duo are known well to locals on the Island. Greg Guthrie began his Island career as the Shoals Club chef in 2004. (Side note: He met Katie when she also worked at the Shoal’s Club during the summer of 2005!) In late 2010, Greg took over the culinary efforts at Maritime Market where he revamped the menus, introduced Family Meals and started the Sweet Bay catering operation. 

Greg’s knack and flair for helping businesses reach their potential, along with Katie’s passion for wellness and self care (and a home­based skincare business of her own) will be tremendous assets for them as the new operators of Island Retreat & Day Spa.  

The Island Retreat & Spa Experience

The revamped Island Retreat & Spa is highly focused on creating a ‘deluxe spa experience’ from the moment customers step in the door. Tucked away in a tranquil setting under a lush canopy of live oaks and sabal palms, The Island Retreat Spa and Salon embodies all of the tranquil and stress­free qualities the Island has to offer. The new owners are bringing new products, new prices, and a new look to the both the interior of the Spa and the website as part of their plan to revitalize the Spa.
