The Original Dark n' Stormy, with a Twist

Bald Head Island Dark n Stormy Recipe

We hope you all enjoyed last week’s ‘Last Summer Drink.’ If you missed it, you can find the recipe here

This week we’re going to break down how to make the perfect Dark n’ Stormy, a rum and ginger beer concoction, perfect for the weeks leading up to Halloween. There are several variations on this Bermudan national drink however, we are going to show you an easy twist on the original, made popular here in the United States.

You’ll need a Collins glass, 2 ounces of dark rum, 3 ounces of ginger beer, and ½ ounce of lime juice*. (Told you it was easy!)

First step

Combine the rum and ginger beer in a tall glass full of ice. The rum and ginger beer should complement each other perfectly with just the right balance of rich and spicy between the two. Depending on which brands you use, you may need to adjust the proportions. A little trial and error won’t hurt!

Last step

The last step is adding in the lime juice - which is optional. In the true national drink of Bermuda, lime juice is not be used, however we think it gives a nice brightness to the spice and rich flavors we mentioned before.

Enjoy & Reflect

Typical of rum drinks, the Dark n’ Stormy cocktail originated from sailors. According to rumahoy.com, the name originated when a sailor, holding up the dark-cloud-in-a-glass beverage, observed that the drink was ‘the color of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under.’*

When staying on Bald Head Island, it’s not hard to pretend you’re in the Caribbean islands with the beautiful sandy beaches and private oasis of calm around you. So grab your three (or two) ingredients, some ice, and carry on the tradition in the beautiful oasis of Bald Head Island. We know we will!
