Weekly News from BHI's Maritime Market, Thanksgiving Edition - 11/26

Your weekly news from the good folks at the  Martime Market. If you haven't signed up for their news-filled email blasts, you can do so here.

The Market will be open until 8pm this evening. We're also hosting a wine & beer tasting from 4-7pm this afternoon, so please drop by and have a taste!  We're also open on Thanksgiving Day from 8am - Noon. If you've ordered a whole roasted turkey or a "whole shebang" turkey dinner, please pick it up tomorrow before Noon!

The Village Chapel will be hosting a service of Praise and Thanksgiving on Thursday morning, November 27th, at 9:30 am, and all are welcome to attend.

Chef Chip's famous Thanksgiving Oyster Roast is now officially sold out. For those holding a reservation, we'll start early - around 5pm on Friday evening - with beer & wine on the side porch. The oyster buffet will open around 5:45, with a bountiful selection of steamed Stump Sound oysters, steamed shrimp, pulled pork barbecue (for the non-seafood types) and loads of Chip's special side items, plus a few chef surprises. The evening will be clear & cool, with temperatures in the low 50's at suppertime, so dress appropriately - we'll be sitting outside :)

On Friday, Nov. 28, Bald Head Blues will be hosting their "Black Friday" sale, with discounts too deep for my capitalist blood :)  Young Claude will have some new items as well, and it's a perfect time to knock out your holiday gift list! 

Bald Head Island Artisans Show and Sale will take place at the BHI Club on Friday, Nov. 28 from 10am-5pm. Numerous unique handcrafted items created by island artisans will be on display, including beautiful handcrafted jewelry with semi-precious stones, pearls, shells and fine glass. Also, a variety of fabric art such as home décor, wall hangings, aprons, scarves, purses, quilts, handbags and tote bags - all of which make perfect holiday presents. Admission is free. Also on Friday 28th,  from 11am – 4pm, the Public Safety Department will be hosting a Drug Take Back program. Any medications that people would like to have disposed of will be accepted at the Public Safety building.

Peggy Cleary will be teaching at All About Art on Friday & Saturday, Nov. 28 & 29th, and she'll be teaching classes for kids and adults. The BHI Club's annual Posh Pet Parade happens on Friday, Nov. 28 and begins at 2pm. The entry fee is only $10.00 per pet, and all proceeds benefit a local animal shelter. Pets of all shapes and sizes are invited to strut their stuff, and prizes will be awarded in all three categories: Best Trick, Best Costume and Best in Show.

Mojo's is hosting adult Karaoke night on Friday night during Thanksgiving weekend. Drop by and belt out your favorite Mellencamp or Tina Turner tune :)

The Smith Island Art League of Bald Head Island will hold its annual Thanksgiving weekend art show and sale on Friday, Nov. 28th and Saturday, Nov. 29th at the Association Center. The next Turtle Trot happens on Saturday, November 29. Registration begins at 8:30am and the run begins at 9:30am. All proceeds benefit turtle conservation. If you register early at http://bhic.org you'll save a few bucks.

The BHI Club's annual Holiday Craft Workshop happens on Saturday, Nov. 29th from Noon - 3:00pm in the Palms Room. The cost is only $25.00 per person. This activity is designed for kids aged 5 and up and adults too! Crafts include: ginger bread house decorating, tag and ornament designs & more DIY keepsakes. Cheryl Barnes will be hosting her next cooking class - "Holiday Entertaining" on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 29 at 6 Widgeon Court from 3-6pm. She's the author of the popular cookbook "Feasting on Bald Head"   and gets festive with delicious recipes for easy holiday treats to make, savor and share in this on-going series of demonstration cooking classes. A signature cocktail, wine, generous tastings of all the prepared recipes and a signed copy of her BHI cookbook are included. $125 per person. Old Baldy's annual Light Up the Holidays Open House and Christmas Tree Auction takes place on Saturday, Nov. 29th from 5:30-7:30pm at the Old Baldy Lighthouse. The lighthouse, grounds and keeper's cottage are all decked out in traditional holiday greenery and aglow with twinkle lights. Also, drop by the Keeper's Cottage and pick up a free, 3'  table top artificial tree. Then, decorate your tree with a theme of your choice and donate the tree back to Old Baldy for the silent tree auction. All trees will be on display at island locations and at Old Baldy before the open house. All proceeds benefit historic preservation. Contact Old Baldy with questions at 910-457-7481.
