Posted on Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Your weekly news from the good folks at the  Martime Market. If you haven't signed up for their news-filled email blasts, you can do so here.

The BHI Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will meet tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. in the Berne Room at the Association Center. All Chamber members are invited to attend. Contact Sherry Hardison at bhichamber@gmail.com with questions.

Golf cart registration for 2015 begins this Friday. If you're registering a cart for the first time, you must show up in person (with your insurance card) at the Public Safety Department. Renewal registrations may be completed online though the Village's web site at http://villagebhi.org/ Contact Public Safety with questions at 910-457-9700.

BHI's Harper Peterson is a serial entrepreneur, active thespian and retired politician. I don't know where he finds the energy or the time, but he continues to inspire me. He's the owner of Delphina, Riverside Adventures, Will-o-the-Wisp & Sandpiper Coffee & Ice Cream - and that's just on BHI. He owns other businesses in Wilmington, where he once served as the City's Mayor. Yesterday Harper sent me a flyer announcing the Wilmington City Stage Company's production of A Christmas Story - the musical, and starring - you guessed it - Harper Peterson. The production runs from Nov. 21 through Dec. 7. Ticket information is available at http://www.citystageco.com. Break a leg, Harper!

Thanksgiving weekend is two weeks away, and there are many activities going on 'round the island. Here's a sneak preview:

Saturday, Nov. 22 - Betsy Helton Kimmel is offering a Gentle Yoga and Stretching Workshop at 10 a.m. at the Association Center. This is a great opportunity to experience a gentle yoga class in a stress-free environment. Students should bring their own mats; blocks and straps are provided. The cost is $15 per person, and all levels welcome. Contact Betsy at 404-426-7515 or visit laughandbreatheyoga.com for more details.

Also on Saturday, Nov 22 - Jay Vics will be teaching an Android class at the BHI club from 9 to 11am. The cost is $25 and payment will be accepted the morning of the workshop. Please RSVP by November 20th at the following link: http://www.bhiclub.net/workshops. Assorted coffees, teas and breakfast pastries/muffins will be provided at 9 a.m. Please Note – This is for Androids, not iPhones.

During Thanksgiving week, the Market will operate on a modified schedule. We'll extend our hours until 8pm on Wednesday, Friday & Saturday. On Thanksgiving Day, we'll be open from 8am - Noon. All orders for Thanksgiving meals/sides can be picked up that morning beginning around 9 a.m. Oven space is filling up fast, so if you'd like to place an order for the "whole shebang," or just a roasted turkey, or to reserve specific side items, oysters, or other specialties, please visit our website at http://maritimemarketbhi.com/Thanksgiving.aspx .

On Friday, Nov. 28, Bald Head Blues will be hosting their "Black Friday" sale, with discounts too deep for my capitalist blood. Young Claude will have some new items as well, and it's a perfect time to knock out your holiday gift list!

Peggy Cleary will be teaching at All About Art on Friday & Saturday, Nov. 28 & 29th, and she'll be teaching classes for kids and adults. Call All About Art at 910-336-5336 or email allaboutartbhi@gmail.com for more information. Also, check out the new jewelry from Nina Nguyen, Brewster Designs, and more, and kick off your holiday gift shopping!

The BHI Club's annual Posh Pet Parade happens on Friday, Nov. 28 and begins at 2 p.m. The entry fee is only $10.00 per pet, and all proceeds benefit a local animal shelter. Pets of all shapes and sizes are invited to strut their stuff, and prizes will be awarded in all three categories: Best Trick, Best Costume and Best in Show.

On Friday, Nov. 28, Chef Chip will be hosting a Thanksgiving Oyster Roast on the side porch!  This is a casual family-style (and family-friendly) event that always sells out. The buffet is bountiful and includes steamed oysters, steamed shrimp, and loads of Chip's special side items, plus a few chef surprises. We do require reservations for this, and payment is made at the event. Go to http://maritimemarketbhi.com/oyster-roast.aspx

Old Baldy's annual Light Up the Holidays Open House and Christmas Tree Auction takes place on Saturday, Nov. 29th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Old Baldy Lighthouse. The lighthouse, grounds and keeper's cottage are all decked out in traditional holiday greenery and aglow with twinkle lights. Also, drop by the Keeper's Cottage and pick up a free, 3'  table top artificial tree. Then, decorate your tree with a theme of your choice and donate the tree back to Old Baldy for the silent tree auction. All trees will be on display at island locations and at Old Baldy before the open house. All proceeds benefit historic preservation. Contact Old Baldy with questions at 910-457-7481.
