Weekly News from BHI's Maritime Market - 11/5

Posted on Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Your weekly news from the good folks at the  Martime Market. If you haven't signed up for their news-filled email blasts, you can do so here.

The next Howl at the Moon Sunset/Moonrise party happens tomorrow night, and is generously sponsored by Ann & Lawry Bump. We'll gather as usual at Beach Access 39 from 4-6 p.m., and we'll have the bonfire blazing. Chef Chip is bringing a huge pot of soup. BYOB and bring an appetizer to share. The sun will set at 5:14 p.m. and the moon will promptly rise soon after - at 5:20 p.m., to the Celtic melodies of our bagpiper.

The Friends of Music Society's 2014-2015 Concert Series begins this Friday at 7:30 p.m. The first concert of the season features organist Douglas Major. He is one of this country's finest concert organists and his program will feature his transcription of the American Classic Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. The concert will also include the music of Bach, Dirksen, Franck and Walton, and promises to be one of the Society's best concerts ever. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, these events are free of charge. For information, contact Bob Daffer at n98rd@aol.com or blkswnhall@aol.com.

This coming Sunday (after 2 p.m.), the Market will be honoring our employees and their families with an Employee Appreciation picnic!  Our staff has worked so hard this season, and our success is due entirely to their collective efforts. If you're on the island this coming Sunday afternoon, we invite you to drop by and pass along your own thanks and good wishes to our staff members. We want to thank YOU as well for being our customer!  You'll have an opportunity to sample and savor some delicious specialties prepared by Chef Chip on our brand-new customized pig cooker. Chip will be inaugurating our new toy with various items - from pork shoulders to chickens, seafood, beef brisket, a whole turkey, and a few surprises, along with some traditional picnic sides and all washed down with sweet tea or keg beer. The food and drink is our treat, as it is our privilege and honor to serve you.

Pictures from our inaugural Bluefish Bonanza Family Fishing Tournament have now been posted on the Chamber's website, and they're fantastic!  See how many folks you recognize. Seeing all of the kids just warms the heart, and the feedback from participants has been overwhelming. We're looking forward to hosting this again next fall, and hope that you'll participate with your own children or grandchildren. Thanksgiving orders are coming in at a steady pace - a good thing, but don't let the time get away from you. If you wait too late, not only will we run out of oven capacity, but the Clubs will also get booked. We're about three weeks out from this tradition-filled BHI weekend, and the Market is providing an incredible selection of seasonal favorites. Chef Chip will be roasting whole fresh turkeys, making cranberry sauce & oyster stuffing, along with your favorite sides. Tony will be featuring fresh turkeys, fresh local oysters, clams, and USDA Prime Beef, along with the freshest local seafood. We'll have cakes, pies, wine specials, and much more. We'll even be hosting our own oyster roast on the side porch over the weekend. Our Thanksgiving specials and reservation forms have now been posted on our website at http://maritimemarketbhi.com/Thanksgiving.aspx. We have limited oven capacity, so be sure and get your orders in as soon as you can.

Both of our Clubs will also be hosting Thanksgiving buffets, and both will sell out. Call the BHI Club for reservations at 910-457-7300, or call the Shoals Club at 910-454-4850.

There are lots of events happening during the Thanksgiving week. I'll begin posting the full slate of Thanksgiving week activities beginning this Sunday. Meanwhile, enjoy this wonderful autumn day on the island with your friends & family, and we'll see you 'round the Market!
