Weekly News from BHI's Maritime Market - 10/29

Posted on Thursday, October 30, 2014

Your weekly news from the good folks at the Martime Market. If you haven't signed up for their news-filled email blasts, you can do so here

The Market will be observing our Fall hours through this weekend - putting off the changeover to our winter hours for a couple more days.  We'll be open until 7 p.m. each evening, including Friday & Saturday, and we'll close at 4p.m. this coming Sunday, Nov. 2.  Beginning on Monday, Nov. 3, we'll fully convert to our winter hours - operating from 8am – 6 p.m. daily, and closing at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Melissa and young Claude are taking Bald Head Blues on the road again.  This coming weekend, they'll be showing off the Bald Head Island lifestyle in Raleigh at the Junior League's annual "Shopping Spree."  The Shopping Spree is a huge event with hundreds of vendors, and takes place at the Raleigh Convention Center.  The show runs from Thursday through Sunday, and showtime hours vary daily.  If you're in the area, please drop by and say hi (and bring your friends)  BHB will be located at booth 138.  For more information and tickets to this year's Shopping Spree, please click http://www.jlraleigh.org/?nd=shopping_spree.  You can also check out the new fall fashions & accessories at http://www.baldheadblues.com, and look for postings & pics from the show.

This coming Friday, October 31, several retailers will be offering treats to any costumed creatures that might arrive on their doorstep :)  Participating retailers (so far) include the BHI Limited Rental Relations office, the Bald Head Association, Bald Head Blues, Maritime Market, Mojos, Project Works, Room Service and Turtle Central.  Make sure your goblins arrive during normal business hours for these entities.

If you find yourself in Southport on Saturday morning, you can join fellow islander Betsy Kimmel for her Free Yoga Class at the Waterfront Park (at the end of Howe St. in Southport) at 9am.  No yoga experience is necessary. For more details go to www.laughandbreatheyoga.com or call Betsy at 910-250-9171.

On Sunday, join your fellow islanders for the Southport-Oak Island Interchurch Fellowship Walk, benefitting the local Food Pantry.  Meet at the Public Safety Building at 10:00 am.  The walk will take you to the Village Chapel and back, with snacks & water along the way.  Please make checks payable to SOIIFC and write "Walk" on the memo line. If you have any questions, please contact Clark Pennell  at 910-520-1071.

The next Howl at the Moon Sunset/Moonrise party happens next week, on Thursday, Nov. 6, and is generously sponsored by Ann & Lawry Bump.  With the time changing back to EST this Sunday, this will be an early evening.  We'll gather as usual at Beach Access 39 from 4-6pm, and we'll have the bonfire blazing.  Chef Chip will bring a huge pot of soup.  BYOB and bring an appetizer to share.  The sun will set at 5:14pm and the moon will promptly rise soon after - at 5:20pm, to the Celtic melodies of our bagpiper.

The Friends of Music Society's 2014-2015 Concert Series begins on Friday November 7, 2014 at 7:30pm.  The first concert of the season features organist Douglas Major.  Doug was organist and choir master at Washington National Cathedral for 28 years where he played for presidents and kings and has recorded with the world famous Empire Brass. He is one of this country's finest concert organists and his program will feature his transcription of the American Classic  Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. This transcription contains 85,000 notes and is one of the most spectacular pieces ever performed on the Organ. The concert will also include the music of Bach, Dirksen, Franck and Walton, and promises to be one of the Society's best concerts ever.  Thanks to the generosity of many donors, these events are free of charge.   For information, contact Bob Daffer at n98rd@aol.com or blkswnhall@aol.com.

It's time to make plans for Thanksgiving :)  We're only four weeks out from this tradition-filled BHI weekend, and the Market will once again provide an incredible selection of seasonal favorites.  Chef Chip will be roasting whole fresh turkeys, making cranberry sauce & oyster stuffing, along with your favorite sides.  Tony will be featuring fresh turkeys, fresh local oysters, clams, and USDA Prime Beef, along with the freshest local seafood.  We'll have cakes, pies, wine specials, and much more.  We'll even be hosting our own oyster roast on the side porch over the weekend.  Our Thanksgiving specials and reservation forms have now been posted on our website at http://maritimemarketbhi.com/Thanksgiving.aspx.  We have limited oven capacity, so be sure and get your orders in as soon as you can.

Both of our Clubs will also be hosting Thanksgiving buffets, and both will sell out.  Call the BHI Club for reservations at 910-457-7300, or call the Shoals Club at 910-454-4850.
