The story of Cape Fear Station on Bald Head Island begins more than
a century before the plans for the community were ever conceived.
In 1882, the United States Life Saving Service (predecessor to
the U.S. Coast Guard) established an outpost called Cape Fear Station
on the east end of Bald Head Island. For more than five decades,
the station’s brave servicemen stood watch over this part
of the Atlantic Ocean, including Cape Fear and the vast Frying Pan
Shoals, courageously rescuing shipwrecked sailors. Their intimate
little community was expanded in 1903 with the installation of the
Cape Fear Light, along with a trio of cottages for the lighthouse
keepers and their families.
Today, another small group of families is coming together in a
namesake village near the location of the original station. In spirit
and design, this Cape Fear Station embodies a profound respect for
the island’s remarkable past, a celebration of its glorious
present, and a cohesive vision for its promising future. |
