No Boundaries Art Colony Gathers for Sixth Season

A unique artistic and cultural exchange that includes 19 artists from 10 countries will convene on Bald Head Island the first two weeks of November to create art, exchange ideas and work together to address humanitarian issues as well as artistic philosophies. Many local artists have also been invited to participate in the art colony.

While on the island, artists will reside at Captain Charlie’s cottages and work in various temporary studios around the island. Visitors will be welcome to drop in and meet the artists during a scheduled "Open Studio," Nov. 11. Some of the work created during this time will be available for purchase at The Woods Gallery on Bald Head Island. Use of Captain Charlie’s cottages is donated by Bald Head Island Limited.

"No Boundaries Inc. provides artists from around the world and the local community a forum for free expression and cross-cultural dialogue," according to founders and directors Dick Roberts, Pamela Toll and Gayle Tustin. "Our focus this year is collaboration with the "Paint a Future" organization, which encourages children in ghettos around the world to express their dreams for the future through their paintings. In turn, artists paint large canvases that are inspired by the children’s paintings, and proceeds from these paintings provide housing, food, medicine, schools and playgrounds for the children," said Tustin.

A special reception for the artists to meet the public is also planned Nov. 8 from 5 until 7 p.m. at The Woods Gallery located at 12A Crews Quarters on Maritime Way. The reception adds yet another opportunity for islanders to experience the works of many artists. Jonathan Willis, Deborah Cavenaugh and Ann Cary Hevener were featured artists during September "meet the artist" receptions.

Willis demonstrated his nationally known art of shorebird and decoy wood-carvings. Cavenaugh, known for her whimsical portrayals of comfortable scenes and familiar images, is currently creating a new limited-edition collectible print of the Bald Head Island Marina, which will be released through The Woods Gallery in November.
