Remembering Heroic Sacrifices and Our Common Heritage
Although ancient civilizations honored their fallen heroes, it wasn't until the 20th century that a national holiday was declared specifically to recognize men and women who died in military service to their country. It has since become one of the most celebrated patriotic holidays in America.
Bald Head Islanders continue this tradition along with thousands of other communities across the nation this Memorial Day, when families and friends gather for quiet moments to honor men and women of the armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It's also the traditional beginning of summer, and islanders are gearing up for the season with a full schedule of fun activities and events.
At the heart of the weekend's events is the special service on May 26 sponsored by the Old Baldy Foundation with a call to service, flag ceremony and national anthem honoring men and women who have given their lives in military service. Poetry readings by veterans and a wreath-making by children will be followed by taps and a moment of silence. Attendees are invited to picnic on the lighthouse grounds afterwards and to enjoy homemade ice cream.
Events and activities begin Friday, May 23, with a Patriotic Tie Dye, and continue throughout the weekend. Included among the events is a Saturday cookout at the Harbourside Pavilion, hosted by Bald Head Island Limited and The Island Agency, featuring games and live music. Saturday's schedule also includes the Bald Head Island Artisans Show and Sale of hand-crafted items, as well as a Wines of the World Tasting at the Maritime Market.
An island-wide Parade of Homes will be hosted by Bald Head Island Limited and The Island Agency, featuring real estate open houses that showcase some currently available island homes. Wine & Music at The Hammocks Clubhouse gives property owners and vacationers an opportunity to learn more about fractional ownership in this unique vacation home neighborhood.
Drawing Saturday to a close, the oceanfront Shoals Club's party heralds the opening of the club's summer season with an evening of dining and dancing, including special activities for the kids. The Bald Head Island Club will host Parents Night Out, an evening of games and other activities for kids.
On Sunday, May 25, a Fun Run on the beach is designed for every member of the family to complete. For those who'd rather play tennis, action takes place on the Bald Head Island Club tennis courts with a Round Robin Doubles Tournament. An afternoon of music and pool games hosted by the Shoals Club rounds out the day's activities.
Nature lovers may want to "conserve" their energy for the Bald Head Island Conservancy events bound to please the most dedicated environmentalists. With its internationally recognized programs, the conservancy has scheduled several events that explore Bald Head Island's significant wildlife habitats.
Kayak excursions on the island's tidal creeks will reward participants with sightings of wading birds and other wildlife that make their homes in the pristine marsh bordering the north shore. Designated an Audubon Important Bird Area, the island is in the migratory path of numerous species, making birding walks a treasured experience.
Other Conservancy activities include crabbing, cast netting, beachcombing biology, and an evening hike through Middle Island Preserve — another opportunity for birding and photos.
A complete schedule of events will be available at the mainland ferry terminal, on the island at Guest Services, at the Bald Head Island Limited and The Island Agency sales offices or the Maritime Market, or download the complete schedule of events, click here.
