Writers often find their work is inspired by beautiful places. If you have ever wanted to study writing in a natural setting, the Bald Head Island Creative Writing Retreat is for you. The event, which takes place Friday, March 14-Sunday, March 16, 2008, is open to writers of all levels of experience.
Featuring a talk by North Carolina legend Clyde Edgerton and classes by acclaimed authors Lavonne Adams, Karen Bender, David Gessner, Rebecca Lee, and environmentalist Anthony Snider, the Bald Head Island Creative Writing Retreat features an intense weekend of writing workshops, craft classes, social events, and tours of the island's maritime forest and salt marshes. Each day features three hour-long classes and scheduled events, but plenty of time is also left open for just strolling the beach, allowing developing writers to get away from the world and focus on their craft.
The $450 cost for the retreat includes workshop registration, catered meals and a special Saturday night event at the oceanfront Shoals Club. Dormitory-style accommodations are available at the Bald Head Island Conservancy, and island home rentals are offered by Bald Head Island Limited at a 15-20% discount off published rates. To reserve a rental house, call 1-800-432-7368 and choose option 1. Be sure to give the referral number of 2S2545 or say you're with the Writing Retreat to receive the discounted price.
The Creative Writing Retreat is a cooperative endeavor by UNC Wilmington, the Bald Head Island Conservancy, and Bald Head Island Limited.
