BHI Developer's 25th Year Indicates Renewed Commitment to Island Community

Marking the 25th anniversary of the Mitchell family's purchase of the undeveloped portions of Bald Head Island, the year 2008 promises to be one that reflects a renewed commitment to its responsible development and stewardship by Bald Head Island Limited.

Setting the stage as a harbinger of things to come, the new mainland passenger ferry terminal is currently under construction at Deep Point Marina, on the west bank of the Cape Fear River in Southport. The $15 million project is considered one of the most significant endeavors ever undertaken by the company. With the start of site work activities last fall, construction will continue throughout 2008, with completion of the main parking facilities and the ferry terminal anticipated by year's end.

Reaffirming its appeal as a premier residential and vacation community, Bald Head Island saw continued demand for homes and homesites in 2007 despite a nationwide slowdown in real estate sales. By year's end, the combined closed sales of Bald Head Island Limited and The Island Agency, a highly successful real estate sales partnership, totaled $54.5 million.

Well into the first quarter of 2008, an excellent selection of homes and homesites in a variety of environments continue to generate sales activity from prospective real estate clients.

Highlights of these ongoing projects include two new homes now under construction on Loggerhead Beach, one of the most desirable oceanfront locations on the island, as well as other new homes in Harbour Village, on Federal Road, in the maritime forest, and in Cape Fear Station, the island's master-planned community near the Cape Fear point.

New homes are also available for sale in the third and final phase of The Hammocks, a neighborhood of 23 cottages offering fractional ownership of a beautifully designed, fully furnished vacation home for a much smaller financial commitment than traditional whole ownership. Ownership in The Hammocks also includes year-round membership in three island clubs and the option of trading use of a Hammocks home for vacation homes in select locations worldwide.

A variety of food and beverage services for property owners and guests also made their debuts in 2007. Major renovation and expansion of Eb & Flo's harbourside steam bar and the Maritime Market Deli now allows more varied menus and seating options. The River Pilot Cafe has become a seasonal restaurant serving dinner April through October, and the Harbourside Pavilion continues to be the primary location for events catered by the River Pilot Cafe.

Commercial spaces designed to provide a wider range of retail products and a variety of services for island property owners and guests are either completed and occupied or under construction. Among these are Crew's Quarters, which provides living accommodations on the upper levels with retail space at street level, and Merchant’s Row on Edward Teach Wynd, which offers convenient, attractive retail office space and equipment storage for on-island contractors and service providers.
