South Beach To Welcome a Pair of Handsome New Homes

"You never know how many friends you have until you have a house at the beach," goes the popular saying. Two new homes being built on South Bald Head Wynd by BHI Construction Co. will have friends old and new arriving to explore their charm, character and unique architectural details.

Jason Bigelow and George Graves, architects for the homes, worked collaboratively with Kent Mitchell and others on the design of these special houses.

"Both homes are designed to take full advantage of their locations, with direct access to South beach," said Jason. "From the moment you step onto these homesites, the ocean is visible through the foundation breezeways and upper entry foyers."

Architects employed natural red cedar for the roofs and shingled exteriors to tie the architecture to the vernacular Bald Head Island style. Inside finishes incorporate exposed fir beams with natural finished tongue and groove ceilings to create warm natural interior spaces. "A beach house should have great exterior spaces, as well as a fantastic interior, and these homes have both," said Jason.

Both houses have open floor plans, with primary living, kitchen, dining and master bedrooms on the first level. They both boast gourmet kitchens, large master bathrooms, and, of course, unrivalled ocean views. Traditional detailing and time-tested materials were selected for the exterior of both homes.

The most pronounced difference in the plan designs is their entry. The house at 976 South Bald Head Wynd has a more traditional entry foyer, so the den area and master bedroom have a formal space separating them. The house next door at 978 South Bald Head Wynd, which is currently 75 percent complete, has an open entry breezeway, so the rear deck is instantly accessible from the front entry. This breezeway separates the main living spaces from a guest crofter and gives this home a more casual feeling.

"We have always looked to the original beach cottages built at Nags Head and Wrightsville Beach for design inspiration and the many inventive shingle-style homes built on the northeast Atlantic coast," explained Jason. Some of that character is reflected in the many spaces available for family gatherings, oversized shady porches with deep overhangs, and living spaces that are carved out of the roof and attic areas.

"This architecture utilizes simple building forms, wraparound porches and a story and a half design for the upper floor," said Jason. "We believe that we have created two homes, side by side, that are comfortable, robust, and outstanding additions to the Bald Head Island community of summer seacoast architecture."
