Old Baldy Duck Race Raises Funds for Pirate Festivities at Lighthouse

National Lighthouse Day will be celebrated on Bald Head Island with pirates galore Aug. 1-3. Kids of all ages are invited to enjoy an island-wide treasure hunt, a pirate costume contest, pirate grub and grog (food and drink), live entertainment, children's activities, a thieves' market, a pirate costume ball (adults only), a pirate movie projected on the lighthouse, and much more.

To support the lighthouse restoration projects, the Old Baldy Foundation is hosting the Second Annual Old Baldy Duck Race. Adopt a duck for $10 and take a chance on winning one of three great prizes (first prize is a ride over to Bald Head Island from Southport on the pirate ship!). The race will be held June 22 at 1 p.m. in Bald Head Creek. You do not need to be present to win.

Executive Director of the Old Baldy Foundation, Ann Mills, gratefully acknowledged that last year's fundraiser was a huge success. "We raised approximately $30,000," she said. That’s a $10,000 increase over the previous year's total, and a sum that surpassed their fundraising goals for the event. Ann was excited about the non-financial goals they reached, as well.

"We are trying to create a community spirit around the lighthouse, " Ann said, and the more visitors that come to see Old Baldy, the more people will hopefully see its preservation as a way to become part of the larger community, such as through volunteering.
