Holiday Tastings Around the Island

Not sure what champagne and sparkling wine to serve with your holiday meals? Tired of drinking the same old beer? Want to sample some delicious holiday cooking this season? Here's your chance.

On weekends in December, Eb & Flo's Steambar will celebrate the holiday season by featuring seafood entree specials and a holiday speciality drink menu including holiday classics like Yule nog and spiced apple cider. If you'd rather not cook Christmas Eve dinner, on Monday, December 24, the oceanfront Shoals Club is serving a wonderful holiday meal from 5-7 p.m. Dinner includes a salad, choice of entrée and dessert for $35 for adults; children 5-12, $16. Reservations required. Please call (910) 454-4850.

On Friday, December 28, the Maritime Market Café will host a Champagne and Sparkling Wine Tasting from 4-7 p.m. The market's wine consultant will feature various champagnes and sparkling wines, just in time for the New Year's Eve holiday. No charge.

Let the festivities begin on New Year's Eve with a Kids' New Year's Eve Celebration from 9:30 a.m.-12:01 p.m. at the Harbourside Pavilion. The kids can celebrate with crafts, games and a ball drop at noon! Reservations required. Please call (910) 457-3701.

Later that day, the Shoals Club is offering a special New Year's Eve dinner from 6:30-9 p.m. The five-course meal is $95 for adults; children 5-12, $25. Reservations required. Please call (910) 454-4850.

The party continues at the Bald Head Island Club with their New Year's Eve Celebration from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. This fun-filled evening includes heavy hors d'oeuvres, an open bar, a champagne toast, party favors and entertainment for $135 per person; entrance after 10 p.m. is $55, plus tax and gratuity. Hot Spiced Toddy

Ingredients for one serving:

  1. ½ teaspoon sugar
  2. 2 oz. spiced rum
  3. Slice of lemon
  4. Nutmeg
  5. Boiling water

Put sugar in a 10 oz. mug and add enough hot water to dissolve. Add rum, fill with boiling water and stir. Garnish with a slice of lemon and nutmeg. Add a whole cinnamon stick if desired.
