The 2007 Maritime Classic Road Race Exhilarating for All

Warming up may take a bit longer now that the weather has turned chilly, but there's no more ideal place to run than on the wynds and roads on Bald Head Island. Residents and visitors alike enjoyed the annual Bald Head Island Maritime Classic Road Race, held November 3. Sponsored by Bald Head Island Limited and facilitated by the Wilmington Road Runner's Association, the event is one of the area's most popular road races. Over the past 23 years this signature event has grown, with more than 140 participants in this year's competition.

"This year's event was great fun and a huge success," Event Chair Wendy Irick said. "Because both residents and guests can enjoy the Maritime Classic Road Race, as a participant or a spectator, the competition remains an island favorite from year to year."

The Maritime Classic 10K is USA Track & Field Certified, but there was something for everyone with the availability of a 5K race as well as a one mile "Fun Run." The race began in Harbour Village and the course traversed parallel to the ocean and through the maritime forest of Bald Head Island, with 300 spectators cheering the runners on to the finish line.

Winners came from Raleigh, Wilmington, Walnut and Oak Island, NC.
