From Alligators to Star-Spangled Unicyclists, Bald Head Island's Golf Cart Parade Lights Up Independence Day
On Bald Head Island, the Fourth of July means patriotism, stars and stripes, picnics and, thanks to a unique island tradition dating back more than 25 years, decked out golf carts.
This year, the annual Bald Head Island Golf Cart Parade drew 122 entries, 18 more golf carts then last year. Islanders and visitors alike competed for first place in several different categories, including Best of Bald Head Island and Environmental. Cart themes ranged from Charlie's Angels, to pirates, to the summer Olympics.
Winning the Bald Head Island category, the Bedners from Pennsylvania created "Hooked on BHI," a Fishing Rodeo-themed cart complete with a six-foot silver mackerel. Winners in the Tacky Tourist category were the Todd and Johnson families of Brentwood, Tenn., with their caveman-themed cart entitled "Bald Head BC." In the Patriotic category the Confoy family from Tampa, Fl., took home the blue ribbon for their red, white and blue inspired "Bald Head Island Marching Band," which featured unicyclists and bald eagles in addition to a full band.
Taking home the Best Overall as well as first place in the Environmental category, the Bertram and Malkoff families from Silver Springs, Md., started working on their alligator-themed cart, entitled "Gator Aid," last July. Complete with a moveable tail and a mouth that opened wide, this entry was a definite crowd pleaser.
The cart parade was just one of the festivities happening on the island over the fourth. Add in a carnival, fireworks cruise, Conservancy picnic, an array of dining and recreational activities for the whole family and you've got the recipe for a truly "sparkling" Independence Day.
