Woods Gallery Features Wide Range of Art, Artists

More than 25 artists and hundreds of art works received a warm welcome recently with the grand opening of Bald Head Island's Woods Gallery.

Representing a wide range of local, regional and international artists, the gallery features paintings in oils, watercolors and acrylics, as well as prints, metal sculpture, art inspired jewelry, ceramics and photography. Of particular interest to islanders are the many landscapes depicting the incomparable beauty of Bald Head Island.

"People are delighted with the variety of media offered by the gallery," said Director Shawn Best, also a coastal landscape artist. "We've had a steady flow of clients and visitors since the opening and are adding works by new artists almost daily."

Many exhibits in the gallery are the work of island property owners who are members of the Smith Island Art League, a nonprofit organization which features several internationally known island artists. Other works were created during the No Boundaries art colony held each year on Bald Head Island.

The gallery is named in honor of Cynthia Woods Mitchell, formerly an art student at the University of Houston and matriarch of the family that is developing Bald Head Island. She and her husband George P. Mitchell have funded the Mitchell School of Fine Arts at the university, in addition to numerous cultural arts endeavors.

"We believe the gallery adds a great opportunity for island residents and property owners to enjoy some extraordinary art offerings," said Kent Mitchell, president and CEO of Bald Head Island Limited. "We are committed to enriching the overall quality of life for property owners here on Bald Head Island and feel that the gallery will be a key component."
