Hundreds of community-minded residents, property owners and visitors support a variety of nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving the land, history and way of life on Bald Head Island. Your participation and support are welcome and deeply appreciated.

Bald Head Island Conservancy

Respecting its twofold mission of education and conservation, the Bald Head Island Conservancy sponsors diverse environmentally-oriented programs and activities, including:

  • the Sea Turtle Protection Program
  • Conservancy Camp and “EnviroLab” for children grades 3-12
  • daily educational programs during the summer season
  • special weekend programs and forums
  • fishing schools
  • scientific research to benefit the Smith Island complex and surrounding waters

Most programs are free and open to the public.

Proceeds from Turtle Central, the Conservancy’s unique gift/book/apparel shop, supplement donations and membership sales, which underwrite many of the Conservancy's activities. For a schedule of Conservancy activities and programs, call the Conservancy Information Line at (910) 457-5786, 24 hours a day, or visit www.bhic.org.

Smith Island Land Trust
The Smith Island Land Trust (SILT) was established in 1996 as a local nonprofit land conservation organization dedicated to preserving land in its natural state. With endorsement and assistance from conservation groups across North Carolina and many individuals nationwide, the Trust is committed to building support for the protection of the ecologically significant lands within the complex of islands known as Smith Island. In July 2002, SILT merged with the Bald Head Island Conservancy to become a subsidiary corporation under the Conservancy’s Board of Directors.

Funded through private donations, as well as state and federal grants, the organization provides educational information about the historic structure, its keepers and its role in the island's seafaring history.

Both events are open to the public. To learn more about league membership and activities, visit www.smithislandartleague.com.

Village Chapel
Located creekside near Old Baldy Lighthouse, the picturesque Village Chapel of Bald Head Island first opened on Easter Sunday of 1987. Nondenominational services are conducted by visiting clergy year-round each Sunday at 8:30 a.m., and from Memorial Day through Labor Day an additional service is held at 10 a.m. The Chapel began with an initial gift of land from the Mitchell Family, developers of Bald Head Island, and is now funded through community donations. An endowment fund has been established for memorial donations, and arrangements can be made for special services, including weddings.
