of community-minded residents, property owners and visitors support
a variety of nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving the
land, history and way of life on Bald Head Island. Your participation
and support are welcome and deeply appreciated.
Bald Head Island Conservancy
Respecting its twofold mission of education and conservation,
the Bald Head Island Conservancy sponsors diverse environmentally-oriented
programs and activities, including:
- the Sea Turtle Protection Program
- Conservancy Camp and “EnviroLab” for children grades
3-12
- daily educational programs during the summer season
- special weekend programs and forums
- fishing schools
- scientific research to benefit the Smith Island complex and
surrounding waters
Most programs are free and open to the public.
Proceeds from Turtle Central, the Conservancy’s unique gift/book/apparel
shop, supplement donations and membership sales, which underwrite
many of the Conservancy's activities. For a schedule of Conservancy

Smith Island Land Trust
The Smith Island Land Trust (SILT)
was established in 1996 as a local nonprofit land conservation organization
dedicated to preserving land in its natural state. With endorsement
and assistance from conservation groups across North Carolina and
many individuals nationwide, the Trust is committed to building
support for the protection of the ecologically significant lands
within the complex of islands known
as Smith Island. In July 2002, SILT merged with the Bald Head Island
Conservancy to become a subsidiary corporation under the Conservancy’s
Board of Directors.

Old Baldy Foundation
The Old Baldy Foundation was formed in 1985 to preserve and restore
Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse,
built in 1817. Funded through private donations, as well as state
and federal grants, the organization provides educational information
about the historic structure, its keepers and its role in the island's
seafaring history.

Smith Island Museum of History
Completed in the spring of 2000, this structure is a replica of
the 1850s lighthouse keeper’s cottage that stood to the west
of Old Baldy Lighthouse. The museum is furnished with household
items from that time period and displays many historic artifacts.
It also houses a gift shop, with proceeds benefiting the Old Baldy
Foundation. Tours of the museum and lighthouse are available for
a per person/ per visit fee.

Public Service Auxiliary
The Public Service Auxiliary assists Bald Head Island's Fire, Rescue
and Police departments in the following ways:
- provides food and drink, and other needed assistance in times
of emergency, natural disaster or other crises
- organizes and collects funds to be used to supplement tax base
budgeted items for these departments
- organizes and hosts social functions for these departments
Membership is open to all residents and property owners on Bald
Head Island. Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month
at 10 a.m. at the Fire Station, unless otherwise announced. For

Smith Island Art League
In 1993 property owners created the Smith Island Art League to
foster the island's artistic community. The league holds an
annual art show each Memorial Day weekend for the sale of members'
work, and hosts a distinguished lecture by a recognized artist,
professor or curator every fall. Both events are open to the

Village Chapel
Located creekside near Old Baldy Lighthouse, the picturesque Village
Chapel of Bald Head Island first opened on Easter Sunday of 1987.
Nondenominational services are conducted by visiting clergy year-round
each Sunday at 8:30 a.m., and from Memorial Day through Labor Day
an additional service is held at 10 a.m. The Chapel began with an
initial gift of land from the Mitchell Family, developers of Bald
Head Island, and is now funded through community donations. An endowment
fund has been established for memorial donations, and arrangements
can be made for special services, including weddings.
