Bald Head Island Programs & Activities

Bald Head Island offers a calendar of programs and island activities to satisfy the explorer, athlete and adventurer in us all, from ages five to 95.

Bald Head Island Conservancy

In its mission to educate our community about barrier island habitats, the Bald Head Island Conservancy provides year-round environmental activities for families. With 500 different programs, including summer camps for children, naturalist-led kayak tours, and wildlife education about sea turtles, alligators, birds and much more, the independent nonprofit Conservancy will introduce you to the wilds of Bald head Island. Shoals Club Recreation Department

The Shoals Club Recreation Department includes a full-time manager, along with an experienced, attentive seasonal staff. Daily and weekly programs are available for children, teens and adults of all ages and interests through a Shoals Club membership or temporary membership. Learm more at shoalsclub.com.

Boating, Kayaking & Canoeing

From the marina, boats have unobstructed access to the Cape Fear River, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. Small boat rentals are available through the marina dockmaster. Kayak rentals and excursions may be arranged through Riverside Adventure Co., and the marina dockmaster can provide contact information for several island residents who offer canoe and kayaking excursions, creek and river cruises or fishing charters. The Bald Head Island Conservancy also provides group kayak tours.

Bald Head Island Sailing Club

Annual memberships, weeklong temporary memberships, trial, social and seasonal memberships are available in the Bald Head Island Sailing Club, offering convenient access to 20-25' keel boats for use to sail from the Bald Head Island Marina year round. Sailing lessons are also offered for children and adults from April to August. Learn more at bhisailing.com.

Cycling/Bike Rental

Miles of paved roadways offer cyclists a scenic spin through the maritime forest, around the harbour or along the ocean. Contact Riverside Adventure Company to rent a bike by the hour, day or week.

Historic Tour Package
Take the historical - and often hysterical – narrated tour of Bald Head Island to discover facts and fancy, legends and lore. Tours run Tuesday-Saturday starting at 10:30 am.

  • Cost of tours originating on-island : Adults, $35; Children 12 and under, $30
  • Cost of tours originating from Indigo Plantation in Southport : Adults, $45; Children 12 and under, $40

The price also includes round-trip ferry passage, lunch voucher, and entrance to the Smith Island Museum of History and the Old Baldy Lighthouse.
