Marine Maintenance Assistant

Job Description
Under general supervision, assists in the maintenance of a fleet of passenger ferry boats, one tug boat and one barge.  Primary responsibility will be the general cleanliness and appearance of the fleet, accomplished through maintenance and up-keep of paint and coatings, upholstery, floor and wall coverings either directly or with the assistance of certain outside vendors. May assist in repairs and maintenance as directed by supervisor.  Reports to Superintendent of Marine Maintenance.  

-Performs repair and upkeep of coatings on vessels, in compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations, by identifying areas in need of repair and applying the correct preparation and coating to the area in an effort to extend major paint job intervals.  
-Requires a working knowledge of various paint systems including two-part epoxy and LP coatings.  
-Knows and uses proper preparation methods including pressure washing, sand blasting, sanding, feather edging, masking, and priming.  
-Knowledge of and uses proper application methods and tools including airless spray, air spray, roller, and brush as well as how to determine and ensure correct coating thickness, coverage, and temperature ranges, and adjustments for same.
-Identifies interior upholstery, floor, and wall covering damage and deficiencies and ensures they are corrected in a timely manner.
-Responsible to observe state of cleanliness of each vessel and wash them as needed.  Vessel crews also required to clean boats after each PM shift.  
-Assists in performing preventative maintenance and repairs on passenger ferries, tug, and barge during scheduled down periods or in an emergency.  
-Helps in preparing and recording maintenance reports on each vessel as work is performed.
-Ensures cleanliness of Marine Maintenance work shop and surrounding areas including work pier.
-Performs other related work as required.
Graduation from a high school or equivalent supplemented by some vocational training in painting, marine maintenance,  or a combination of training and experience to provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. 
Requires the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work is performed primarily Monday through Friday but some weekend and evening work could be required.  
Involves working outdoors in all weather conditions, and involves exposure to noise and fumes.  Confined space entry required.  
The employee must be able to climb ladders and pass through deck scuttles and hatches.  
Working at height and on platforms over the water required.  
All appropriate safety equipment is provided and required to be worn as needed.
Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing under U.S. Coast Guard Regulations.
