Let it rain . . .
Don’t let gray skies get you down. Check out this list of ways to enjoy Bald Head Island, even when the sun won’t shine. Submitted by our galoshes-sporting man-about-town, Jason Frye.
1. Play a game. Most rental homes have a deck of cards or a board game or two. If not, pick up some cards at the Market or Dockmaster Convenience Store, or use your imagination and revive charades with a Bald Head Island twist-you can only act out things you’ve seen or will see on your vacation.
2. Visit the Smith Island Museum of History and check out the history of Bald Head Island. Through photos, maps and artifacts you’ll learn a little about the place you’re staying. When you’re done, brave the rain and dash over to…
3. Climb Old Baldy. You’ll dry off climbing the 108 steps to the top. Once there, take in the island in the rain. Don’t forget to snap a few pictures for your scrapbook.
4. Make an Ice Cream Sundae (or Monday or Tuesday). Pick up ice cream and all the fixins’ at the Maritime Market for a rainy day treat sure to please everyone in your group. While you’re there…
5. Rent a movie. The Maritime Market has varied selection of movies for kids, teens, families and adults. Don’t forget the popcorn.
6. Stroll The Shops at Maritime Way. Canopy Outfitters, The Silver Peddler, The Woods Gallery and Wayfarer offer something for everyone, whether it’s a gift for someone else or a treat for you.
7. Relax at Island Retreat Spa and Salon. Book yourself a massage, pedicure, haircut or facial treatment for an indulgent way to wait out the rain.
8. Pay a visit to the Judy S. Agner Lending Library. Harbourside next to Eb & Flo’s Steam Bar, the small honor-system lending library is open year-round.
9. Workout at the Bald Head Island Club or Shoals Club fitness center. Both clubs have fitness centers and locker rooms ready to use, so grab a book and hit the bike for a chapter or four.
10. Grab a pen and paper and start a journal about your trip. What better way to remember your trip to Bald Head Island than through your journal? When you get home, type it up and add some pictures from your vacation for an instant and effortless vacation scrapbook.
