The Pirates Are Coming on August 2

Pirate lovers rejoice! Pirate Weekend 2013, sponsored by the Old Baldy Foundation, will take place August 2-4 on Bald Head Island and the schedule looks fearsome!

Friday, August 2, check out the island-wide Treasure Hunt, Pirate Block Party and the now infamous Pirate Invasion of Bald Head Island. On Saturday, August 3, sign your little scalawags up for Pirate Schools, or head over to the Pirates and Pancakes event. Cap off your evening with an extra scary Pirate Ghost Walk. On Sunday, August 4, party all day on the lighthouse grounds with the Pirate Festival, which includes a pirate encampment, sword fights, music, magic, and more.

Smith Island Art Show  Sale Memorial Weekend

The Smith Island Art League will hold its annual Memorial Weekend show and sale on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 at the Bald Head Association Center on Lighthouse Wynd (to the right of the Chapel). The show, which features works from artists with a connection to Bald Head Island, is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. each day. The League has 19 members with a variety of styles and mediums. The two-day show will feature ceramics, oil and watercolor paintings, cards, prints, jewelry, fabric art, stained glass and more. Latitudes Wine Bar Opens

We’re very excited to announce the latest offering at the Shoals Club – Latitudes Wine Bar! Latitudes, which will be located on the Presentation Deck overlooking East Beach, will officially open on May 16th and will serve a selection of wines by the glass, craft beers and delicious small plates to share. Shoals Club members are invited to aspecial sneak preview of Latitudes Wine Bar on Wednesday, May 15 from 5-6 p.m. Sample some of the new menu items and taste a couple of new wine selections from Latitudes while socializing with members and enjoying live entertainment. Afterwards, join us for a special Members Dinner that will preview our new summer dining room menu and feature Chef Chris’s homemade Crème Brulee Cheesecake for dessert. Sweet Bay Cafe Open at Deep Point Marina

Sweet Bay Cafe is now open for breakfast, lunch and snacks at the Deep Point Marina Ferry Terminal. Operated by the folks who own the Maritime Market and Sweet Bay Catering on the island, Sweet Bay Cafe is already delighting customers with their delicious fare.

Breakfast offerings include biscuit sandwiches, breakfast burritos, bagels, muffins, yogurt, pastries and assorted cereals and fruit. For lunch, Sweet Bay Cafe serves a variety of cold grab-n-go sandwiches including chicken, tuna and lobster salad and deli wraps. They also serve gourmet salads and hot dogs with an array of interesting toppings like apple-onion relish, pickles and southern slaw. Sweet Bay also serves beer and wine in addition to coffee, water and soft drinks.

Sweet Bay Cafe's May hours are 7-11 a.m. for breakfast and 11 a.m. -5 p.m. for lunch and snacks. Be sure to stop in next time you find yourself with a few minutes before you hop on the ferry, or get there early on purpose. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

Delphina Opens in Bald Head Island Marina

Bald Head Island's newest restaurant, Delphina, is now open in the former River Pilot location in the BHI Marina. Delphina, described a New World Cantina, serves authentic and original Mexican cuisine with a Cuban and Spanish flair. Executive chef Carlos Rojas created the menu using his most treasured and favorite family recipes.

The diverse menu features interesting small plates like Crab Salad Stuff Avocados and Mexican Bruschetta as well as old favorites like nachos and chips with your choice of salsa, guacamole or queso. Tacos come with a variety of fillings: pulled pork, shrimp with jicama and watercress, carne asada and fish with mango pico.  Cuban sandwiches, quesadillas and a variety of salads offer lighter choices. Entrees include Tilapia a la Veracruzana, Spaghetti a la Poblana with Grilled Chicken Enchilado and Curracso Cubano, or marinated flank steak. A kids' menu is also available. Delphina is open for lunch, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and starting May 15 they'll be open for lunch and dinner, from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Tucked inside Delphina is the Sandpiper Coffee and Ice Cream, which offers baked good in addition to a variety of coffee drinks and 16 homemade ice cream flavors. Sandpiper is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and will stay open until 11 p.m. over Memorial Day weekend.

The May issue of Our State magazine paid homage to Bald Head Island with two great articles.

"The Quiet Wild" is a breathtaking, 24-page photo essay that explores the beautiful environments and friendly faces of Bald Heads Island. See if you recognize any of your favorite island places or smiling faces.

"The Generator Society" tells the story of the 19 families who came to settle on Bald Head in the 1970s, before there was a ferry or roads or electricity. This compelling and well written story is a must read for anyone interested in BHI history.

Bald Head Island Home Featured in Coastal Living

They May issue of Coastal Living features a story on a beautifully restored and decorated Bald Head Island beach cottage. Blue Pearl, owned by island residents Tiffany and Fred McWhorter, is one of the oldest standing homes on BHI. When Tiffany and Fred purchased the property, it was in need of a serious update. Second Edition of Struck by Nature Available at Turtle Central

 A limited, second edition printing of "Struck By Nature: Photographs of Bald Head Island" by Marjorie Brown Pierson is back by popular demand at Turtle Central Gift Shop. The first printing sold out due to overwhelming popularity. This special collection of fine art photography focuses exclusively on Bald Head Island and is bound and printed as a beautiful coffee table book. This book make a terrific gift for the BHI lover in your life. Marjorie Brown Pierson is a visual artist whose work illustrates endangered wetlands in the American South. Her painterly portraits of Bald Head invite the viewer into lush island landscapes, celebrating the beautiful light, rich color and intriguing texture of the island.

Bald Head Island Wellness Retreat Begins April 27

The Bald Head Island Center for Wellness is offering a 6-day, full immersion Wellness Program from Saturday, April 27 through Thursday, May 2. This all-inclusive program offers nutrition and behavioral workshops, cooking classes, meditation and individual and group exercise classes. Bald Head Island Wellness Retreats aim to provide participants with an unparalleled combination of nutrition, exercise and behavioral health instruction designed to improve overall health and well-being.
